In the Presence of Fear

The argument that I found most thought provoking and worth discussing is the last argument in his first essay, XXVII. In this part, Berry talks about being thrifty and learning how to save. He argues that we need to teach our children, "that we cannot spend and consume endlessly. We have got to learn to save and conserve"(pg 9). In our society today, most people spend and spend endlessly on unimportant things or just whatever there heart desired. I remember when I was little, I would spend any amount of money I would get from Christmas and birthdays, on toys and fun things. A couple years later when my parents started to make me pay for things and I started to learn about responsibility, I wished I had learned to save my money and had some of it saved up for important things and now today I do. I agree that we need to conserve and not waste, and that it would help our economy, to cherish what we have but also learn that we don't have to have everything to be happy. As Berry says, we do need a new economy, but one that is founded on thrift and care, on saving and conserving, not on excess and waste.....we need a peaceable economy" (pg 9).

  1. Shelby I agree with you. Many people are irresponsible with their spending and this can effect not only themselves, but the country as a whole.

  2. I agree with you I really think people start saving when they really have to buy for themselves. Also i think that helping our economy is a great way of cherishing what we have.

  4. I found this provoking too. I feel it is a do as I say not as I do situation. Parents spend and waste endlessly while they tell their children to waste.

  5. I thought this idea was provoking too. People don't realize that they need to save their money and spend it on some things they actually need. They also need to stop being so wasteful.
