In the Presence of Fear Essay One

The idea in Berry's essay that is most thought provoking and worthy of discussion is XVIII when it says that in times like this that we have been hurt by those who hate us, and he says something about; "remember that Christ enjoyed us to love our enemies, but this is no less necessary for being difficult". This is because its important to discuss because Christ does want us to love our enemies, its the sang, "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer." This shows that if we go to war with the individuals who destroyed our pride and buildings, and killed many people that we will get our revenge.
This stuck out to me because my parents always used to use the quote with me when I was younger.

  1. We know that revenge is often thought of as sweet and the desire for it is strong. Yet this makes me think about all the stories we have and lessons that revenge is not so sweet and often forgiveness is the thing that ultimately heals people. It is a difficult truth and as humans we see throughout history that we struggle with it. Thanks for getting us started Misti!

  2. Forgiveness is important for those who do harm to us, it definitely isn't easy at all. We need to love our enemies to get past the hardships and ultimately heal for the better despite the true struggle it might be.

  3. Yeah I agree with the forgiveness thing, I think the forgiveness always comes slower in situations like this but it kind of makes me think of when my dad always told me to be "the bigger man" meaning forgive the person instead of making the situation worse which is hard to see when you are so angry.

  4. I agree that we would get our revenge, but I feel like by getting revenge we are just making the problem worse in the long run!
